The venerable maritime trade exchange gave the central district its name

Literally translated, the Spanish word "Lonja" (Catalan: "Llotja") means the stock exchange. In fact, the name of the "La Lonja-Borne" district, which is centrally located in the old town of Palma de Mallorca and in the "Distrito Centro" district, is derived from the historic "Llotja de Palma" or "Lonja de los Mercaderes" maritime trading exchange built in Gothic style between 1420 and 1452 on the Avinguda de Gabriel Roca in the immediate vicinity of the port and the "La Seu" cathedral. The stock exchange, which was also used as a port maintenance center until the 1830s, also served alternately as an arms depot, cannon factory, courthouse and art museum from the mid-19th century until the 1960s. The building, which was extensively renovated from top to bottom between 2013 and 2014, is an internationally renowned cultural and historical gem and one of Palma's most important landmarks. A tour of the impressive building, which can be seen from afar, and a visit to the regular art exhibitions held there are the perfect prelude to discovering the many attractions and sights in the surrounding La Lonja district.
